I felt Sam’s whole body suddenly tighten.

Chapter 40

“You sure I shouldn’t call Janelle?” I asked.

Brad shook his head emphatically as Sam helped him down to the leather sofa in the Tisdales’ living room. The place wasn’t big, but it was nicely decorated and had a sophisticated style to it.

And it was sparkling. Not a single item seemed to be out of place.

“She’ll be home soon,” Brad mumbled. “And anyway, this will give me time to sober up. She hates when I drink too much.”

He smiled a lopsided grin. Sam set him up on the sofa so he’d be comfortable before disappearing into the kitchen.

Brad had said that he was planning on a big night tonight, and he’d kept his word – despite Sam and me not joining in. Brad had kept going back to the bar and ordering more beer throughout the evening, and though he didn’t seem out-of-control drunk, he was very obviously inebriated and needed some help walking back to his house.

Sam returned from the kitchen with a bottle of water and handed it to Brad.

“Drink all this before going to bed, alright, man? And call us if you need anything. We’ll be around.”

Brad nodded.

“Thanks, Sakai. And hey – don’t tell the chief I got smashed tonight, alright?”

“Wouldn’t dream of it. Sleep it off, Brad.”

“Thanks for coming out tonight, Freddie,” Brad mumbled, his eyes already growing heavy with sleep.

“It was fun,” I said with a smile. “Get some rest, Brad.”

The lieutenant was already snoring before we left the house.
